BARRE Barre Museum: Aldrich Public Library, 9 Washington St.: The museum is on the second floor of the library and includes primitive American portraits of leading Barre citizens, photographs, models, tool collections and memorabilia of settlers. Mount Hope Cemetery, off Maple Avenue, Vermont 14: The 75-acre cemetery dates to 1895 and is filled with beautiful examples of the granite carving that made the area famous. Rock of Ages Quarry, Barre Town: The world's deepest granite quarries, through which this city built its economy in the 19th century, are located southeast of the city in the town of Barre. MONTPELIER The Vermont Museum, The Vermont Historical Society, 109 State St.: The museum is based in a prominent former hotel and houses collections of Vermont memorabilia and artifacts from the Woodland period (1200 A.D.) to the present. Vermont State House, 115 State St.: The 1859 state capitol building was designed in the Renaissance Revival style. The building is one of oldest and best preserved state capitols in the nation and includes original furniture and a large collection of paintings and Civil War flags.
NORTHFIELD Norwich University, University Museum, White Chapel: Collections include uniforms, flags, surveying equipment and academic paraphernalia linked to the university's past and the achievements of its alumni from 1819 to present.
WATERBURY Ben & Jerry’s Homemade Inc. Vermont 100: A 30-minute factory tour that begins with a movie about the company founders, history and mission. The guided tour includes a view of the production floor from a mezzanine and ends in a flavor room where visitors partake in free samples of the ice cream. There is also a self-guided tour though the "hall of fame" filled with Ben & Jerry’s memorabilia. Outdoor activities in summer months. Gift shop. Information: (802) 244-8687.
