BURLINGTON

Ethan Allen Homestead, off Vermont 127: 1787 farmhouse of the state's famous founder.

The house is in a 284-acre park and was once part of the 1,000-acre farm where the Revolutionary War hero spent his last days. Tours, multimedia shows, gift shop.

Robert Hull Fleming Art Museum, 61 Colchester Ave.: art classes, exhibits, special events, tours. Permanent collection includes exhibits of American Indian, European, Asian and African art and artifacts. An heirloom appraisal day is held every year on the last Saturday in October.

Lake Champlain Basin Science Center, 1 College St.: hands-on activities as well as exhibits including live frogs, snakes, fish and turtles.

Spirit of Ethan Allen II, Scenic cruises of Lake Champlain aboard a triple-deck cruise ship. The line offers narrated cruises, sunset cruises, and brunch or dinner cruises. Two enclosed, heated decks. Information (802) 862-8300

 

CHARLOTTE

Vermont Wildflower Farm, U.S. 7: Major wildflower center on 6 acres. Seed, book and gift shops, multimedia theater show every half hour. Seasonal hours. Information: (802) 425-3500

 

ESSEX JUNCTION

Discovery Museum, 51 Park St., Essex Junction: hands-on children's museum including natural science center.

 

JERICHO

The Old Red Mill, Vermont 15: includes an exhibition of the work of Snowflake Bentley, the photographer whose work showed that no two snowflakes are alike.

 

RICHMOND

The Old Round Church, Bridge Street: built in 1812 by five religious denominations, the 16-sided building was the site of regular services for each of the denominations for many years. The building is considered one of the most important in the state. The church cost $2,305 to build and was paid for by the sale of its pews.

 

SHELBURNE

Shelburne Farms, intersection of Bay and Harbor Roads: an agricultural estate of more than 1,000 acres with a working farm, historic barns and a farmyard where children can meet a variety of farm animals. The farm offers tours, trails, hay rides, winter sleigh rides, hands-on educational programs and superb views of Lake Champlain. Visitor Center and farm store. The Vermont Symphony Orchestra and Vermont Mozart Festival hold concerts at the farm during the summer. Information: (802) 985-8686

Shelburne Museum, U.S. 7: a nationally celebrated collection of American folk art, artifacts and architecture contained in 37 buildings on 45 acres; totaling 80,000 objects. Includes a former mansion, the steamship Ticonderoga, a private rail car and steam engine. Information: (802) 985-3346

National Museum of the Morgan Horse, 3 Bostwick Road: a museum that tells the story of the Morgan horse, which became a national influence in the 19th century, and its breeder, Justin Morgan. There are exhibits based on the First Vermont Cavalry and the first National Morgan Horse Show. Information: (802) 985-8665

Vermont Teddy Bear Factory, U.S. 7: factory tour of the place where "teddy bears come alive." Can create your own teddy in the "make a friend for life" fun factory. Gift shop. Information: (802) 985-3001
