ADDISON

John Strong DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) Mansion, Vermont 17: a five-room mansion dating back to 1790, listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. Furnished in the style of the Federal and Victorian periods.

Chimney Point State Historic Site, at the intersection Vermont 17 and 125 at the Champlain Bridge: one of the town's earliest settlement locations. The 18th-century tavern contains the state's largest collection of American Indian and early French archaeological material.

FERRISBURGH

Rokeby Museum, U.S. 7: The 1780 house was the home to four generations of the Robinsons, a Quaker family of sheep farmers. The eight-room home exhibits their way of life and the significant role the house played in the Underground Railroad during the Civil War. Information: (802) 877-3406

Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, Basin Harbor Club, Basin Harbor: the region's foremost maritime museum, including artifacts from Lake Champlain, hands-on science exhibits and the Revolutionary War gunboat replica Philadelphia II. Information: (802) 475-2022

Dakin Farm, U.S. 7: Maple syrup, aged cheddar cheese and other Vermont specialty foods can be sampled. On-going exhibits and opportunity to watch how some of the items are produced. Information: (800) 993-2546

 

MIDDLEBURY

Middlebury College, Museum of Art and Center for the Arts, Vermont 30: The museum contains several thousand objects from antiquities to contemporary works, with two permanent galleries devoted to 19th- and 20th-century paintings, sculptures, prints and photographs. Information: (802) 443-5007

Morgan Horse Farm, off Vermont 23: a breeding and training center for the famous horses operated by the University of Vermont. Guided tours of stables and paddocks available. Information: (802) 388-2011

Vermont Folklife Center, 2 Court St.: Based in the house of Gamaliel Painter, Middlebury's founder and a contemporary of Ethan Allen, the center exhibits Vermont traditional folk art with films, videos, lectures and publications. SHOREHAM

VERGENNES

Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, Basin Harbor, Vergennes: A lakeside museum with numerous Lake Champlain artifacts including maritime collections, nautical archaeology and a 54-foot square-rigged Revolutionary War gunboat, which can be boarded and explored.
