MUSEUMS AND HISTORIC SITES

Winooski Historical Society, 1790 Stone House, 73 East Allen Street: contains artifacts, memorabilia and photographs depicting life over the centuries in this former mill town.

Winooski Falls Historic District: one of Vermont's founders, Ira Allen, constructed a dam over the Winooski River in 1786, making it ideal for a variety of mill operations. Textile mills were first established in 1835 and employed nearly everybody in town, which amounted to about 2,000 people during World War II. The last mill closed in 1954. The Champlain Mill on Vermont Route 15 and The Woolen Mill on west Canal Street have been restored and are used for shops and apartments.
