The Town of Williston:
A proliferation of bumper stickers once read, "Don't Mall Williston," in protest of plans launched in the mid-1970s to build a sprawling shopping center known as the Pyramid Mall. Two decades later, that development idea has fallen by the wayside but the once-rural town instead became a sort of county seat for big boxes: gigantic chain stores like Wal-Mart, Home Depot and Toys 'R' Us. The growth spurt of businesses around Taft Corners, just over hill and dale from Williston's historic district, also has begun to change the rural nature of the area. By 1995, new homes were being constructed at a rate of 100 a year.
