Underhill Census 2000
Story |
The Town of Underhill:
Underhill was chartered in 1763 by settlers who cleared land along the Browns River in the area that is today known as Underhill Flats (along present day Route 15). Today, Underhill is really two communities, the Flats and Underhill Center, three miles up the road toward Underhill State Park. The community's most prominent resident is the "old man in the mountain" -- Mount Mansfield, easily Vermont's most famous landmark, and at 4,500 feet, the state's highest mountain. With only a few employers, Underhill is a quiet residential community oriented toward its setting in the natural beauty of Vermont's outdoors. Residents enjoy cross-country skiing in the winters (it may be Chittenden County's snowiest community), hiking and swimming in the summer and a spectacular palette of colors on display in fall.
