As the smallest organized town in the state - all 2,342 acres of it - St. George took its name from King George III of England in 1763. Apparently formed by default when the neighboring communities of South Burlington, Williston, Shelburne and Hinesburg carved out their larger domains, this triangle of territory is the only Chittenden County town without an elementary school. It also lacks a general store, a post office and a church. Once dominated by farms, St. George now lays claim to the Rocky Ridge Golf Course and Vermont Ware, which manufactures the versatile DR Trimmer mower advertised on national television.
