MUSEUMS AND HISTORIC SITES

Middlebury College, Museum of Art and Center for the Arts, Vermont 30: The museum contains several thousand objects from antiquities to contemporary works, with two permanent galleries devoted to 19th- and 20th-century paintings, sculptures, prints and photographs.

Middlebury Historic District: The town, developed with the help of the wood-pressing and marble industries, includes several areas filled with beautiful examples of 18th- and 19th-century architecture. The nearly 300 buildings constructed during this period include the Congregational Church, the Battell and Beckwith commercial blocks, and the Emma Willard House. Some of the key historic buildings of the town are grouped around Middlebury Common where the major roads traversing the area meet.

Sheldon Art Museum, 1 Park Street: Once a marble merchant's mansion, this 1829 house includes six black marble mantels and other exhibits of a 19th century home. Educational programs run at different times of the year and research facilities are available. There is also an art gallery with changing exhibits and a garden.

Morgan Horse Farm, off U.S. 23: a breeding and training center for the famous horses operated by the University of Vermont. Guided tours of stables and paddocks available.

Vermont Folklife Center, 2 Court Street: Based in the house of Gamaliel Painter, Middlebury's founder and a contemporary of Ethan Allen, the center exhibits Vermont traditional folk art with films, videos, lectures and publications. There is a sale of traditional crafts in December.
