U.S. 7 is the major artery of Addison County. It cuts through the center of Ferrisburgh, which borders Charlotte in the southern part of Chittenden County. Only a few years ago did residents make up their minds as to whether there's an "H" in the name (there is -- but not in North Ferrisburg) and in the years ahead they may well have to decide whether the highway is going to turn the town into a suburb of Burlington. There is no town center to speak of, and despite the pressures and profits from development, farming is still the No. 1 occupation. Along the road, look for an old farmhouse and a flock of merino sheep, an animal that was once far more critical to the Vermont economy than cows. Some people think it's the most luxurious wool on Earth.
