Charlotte Census 2000
Story |
The Town of Charlotte:
Originally called Charlotta, after the wife of England's King George III, this community boasts a landing for ferries that navigate across a narrow strip of Lake Champlain to New York state. Although the 26,510-acre town has a curvaceous shore lined with summer cottages, much of the inland - divided by U.S. 7 - still is given over to farming. These green pastures of plenty are often juxtaposed with fabulous homesteads belonging to the many affluent residents of Charlotte, which serves as something of bedroom community for nearby Burlington. Two small mountains - Pease and Philo - are popular with hikers. A segment of Ferry Road considered the town center is still very much a work in progress, with a Town Hall, post office, gleaming new town library and fire and rescue squad.
