Cambridge lies at the base of Mount Mansfield on Vermont 108, the breathtaking Smugglers Notch Road, which is a favorite drive for tourists during foliage season. The road earned its name in the War of 1812 when Vermonters hid cattle and other supplies in the rugged pass on their way into Canada, despite the prohibition against trade with the British-controlled territory. Today, Cambridge's economy relies on the recreation and hospitality industries and on manufacturing operations in the Cambridge Industrial Park. Picturesque Cambridge village has an unusually wide main street, originally built to provide for militia training. The village of Jeffersonville is home to Madonna Mountain, where the Smuggler's Notch resort caters to skiers who love the snow but not the crowds.
